Quick Start

Your first genogram in three minutes

  1. Create the Document
  2. Tap the Add button on the upper right corner, enter a name for the new document and then press the Add button in the dialog box.

  3. Open the document for edit
  4. Tap the row with the name of the new document and choose Open from the left slide-in menu.
iGenogram will enter the Genogram Editing Function.

  5. Place the first Individual symbol
  6. Double tap (tap twice rapidly in approx. the same place) somewhere in the blank area of the diagram and choose one of the available symbols from the pop-up menu named “Symbol to add” (you can scroll the list to see all the available symbols).

  7. Add a couple partner
    • The floating menu should be already around the Individual symbol we placed, if not, tap on the Individual symbol and it will appear.
    • Start dragging the bottom rounded icon and release it where you want to place the partner symbol (you can always move it simply by dragging the partner individual symbol).
    • Now you should have a basic couple represented on the genogram.

  8. Add name and optionally change the type for the Individual symbols
    • As for the previous step, select with a tap one of the individuals to present its floating menu.
    • Tap on the describe icon to open the individual details screen.
    • In the detail screen you can choose another symbol, add a name and optionally other data like: date of birth, date of death, label, etc..
    • Repeat the step for the other Individual. You can also tap the couple relationship and choose the same “book” icon to access its details screen and, eventually, change its type.

You should now have a complete couple represented in the genogram.

  9. Add a child for the couple
    • Select with a tap on the horizontal line the couple relationship to present its floating menu.
    • Start dragging the add child icon and release it in the place where you want to place the child.
  10. Add another Individual and connect it as a child
  11. This time we will see how to connect an existing individual to a couple as a child.

    • Repeat the step 3 to place another Individual in the genogram.
    • Make sure the new individual is selected and its floating menu is on the screen.
    • Start dragging the top rounded icon until it is over-posed to the existing couple relationship (you should see the existing relationship highlighted with a green color), and release it.

Note: If you do not over-pose the dragging icon, you will obtain a connection to a new couple automatically created by iGenogram for you.

  12. Add an Emotional relationship between one of the child and one of the parents
    • Make sure one of the children is selected and its floating menu is on the screen.
    • Start dragging one of the left or right rounded icons until it overlaps one of the parents symbols (you should see the symbol highlighted with a green color), and release it.

Remember: as for all other symbols, you can select it and choose the describe icon to change its type, add a free text label, tied notes or other data.

Managing iGenogram-iPad Documents

Create a document

In the main screen

tap the Add button on the upper right corner, enter a name for the new document and then press the Add button in the dialog box.

Rename, Delete or Copy (duplicate) a document

In the main screen tap the row with the name of the document and choose the option related to what you want to perform in the left sliding menu Rename will open a box to enter the new name to be assigned to the document. Copy will open a box to enter a name to be assigned to the new copy of the document. Delete will ask your confirmation because it is an action that can't be undone.
Note: documents names are based on the iOS file system. Old iOS versions are not case sensitive and will not allow two documents having the same name even with different capitalization (i.e. MyFile and Myfile could not coexist). Newer iOS versions starting from 10.3 are instead case sensitive. So, iGenogram Documents naming behavior is determined by what iOS version is installed on your device.

Password protect a document

To set a password for a document, you need to open the document and choose the Document Options in the Sliding Menu
The password is case sensitive and can contain all kind of characters, iLogoTec Support can't help in recovering lost passwords so be extremely careful in using this feature.
If you want to un-protect a document, enter its Document Options form and set a completely empty password.
A protected document maintains its password also when exported.
Important notes about security: iGenogram doesn't encrypt protected documents so, its protection only limits unauthorized people to access protected documents using the app. If you want to achieve a greater level of security you need to apply the Security Standard Apple Procedures like the ones detailed at the following links:

Editing a genogram: Premise

Editing in Easy or Quick mode

For almost all complex editing operations iGenogram provides two modes:

1) Easy - A succession of simple touches guided by Toolbar and Assistant. It doesn't require anything more than using the “+” button on the top right corner of the screen and is indicated for people having problems with the drag&drop gesture. Also Pop-up Menu Icons can also be used for easy operations when simply tapped.

2) Quick - Slightly more complicated than the Easy one but a lot faster. It requires the ability to execute double taps and drag&drop gestures. It is normally used to connect existing individual symbols with all kind of relationships and even create, if necessary, the other partner of the relationship on the fly. Quick operations are almost always started by dragging one of the circular icons in the Pop-up menu of an existing symbol.

As the Easy mode is self-explanatory, this help file will only describe the editing operations in Quick mode.

Editing a genogram in Quick mode

Toolbar, Assistant and Pop-up menus

Assistant: An area of the screen devoted to dynamically provide users support information on available commands and gestures. Most information contained in this document are summarized by the Assistant and selected in real time depending on the current editing operation and state.
Keeping always an eye on it will provide the user with all the directions she/he needs moment by moment.

Toolbar: Located in the top part of the screen, it provides a series of buttons to issue commands and allows user confirm or end current operations.

When no object is selected in the genogram, the Assistant provides explications for all the Toolbar buttons.

The Toolbar button allows to hide/show the Assistant so, once acquainted with the commands, users may hide it and gain more space available for the diagram.

All symbols (individuals, households, emotional or couple or parents/child relationships) in the diagram can be selected by touching them. Once a symbol is selected, it automatically shows its Pop-up menu around itself. Pop-up menus are specific for each kind of symbol and constituted by a variable number of icons. Each icon has its usage explained in the Assistant.

During editing operations, the Assistant changes its color to show the current state of the operation. For example when placing a relationship with a drag&drop operation, the color of the Assistant (and is text description of course) if it is being connected or not to the nearby individual.

Other operations, for example when adding a Household, need the user to indicate when she/he completed the editing. In those cases the Toolbar will show buttons with a green checkmark and/or a red cross representing the Ok or Cancel buttons.

Place an Individual symbol

A double tap on an empty region of the diagram will open a popup menu containing all the allowed individual types (male, female, etc..).
Selecting one of these types will insert a new symbol in the double tapped diagram place.

Moving an Individual

To move an individual simply drag her/his symbol. When you reach the border of the screen the diagram will scroll automatically until you release the object or leave the border or reach the end of the canvas.

iGenogram-iPad will automatically reroute and adjust all relationships pointing to the moved symbol.

Select a symbol and show its floating menu

Each iGenogram graphical symbols (Individuals, Households, Emotional or Family relationships) can be selected by tapping on it. When selected, the symbol will show its floating menu allowing you to add related symbols (children, relationship, parents), delete it, open its details screen or, in case of a relationship, modify its members so that you can move a relationship from an Individual to another.
When a symbol is selected, tapping on an empty area of the diagram will unselect it.

Create a Couple Relationship between two existing individuals

  • Select the first partner
  • Drag the bottom icon until it overlaps the other partner
  • When the other partner will be highlighted in green, drop the icon
  • Select the couple type in the pop-up list (tapping out of the pop-up will cancel the operation)
  • The new Couple relationship will be ready, to change its type and/or add a free text label or other data, tap the describe icon on its floating menu

Create a Couple Relationship and the other member on the fly

  • Select the first partner
  • Drag the bottom icon until it reaches the area where you want to place the other partner, drop the icon
  • Select the couple type in the pop-up list (tapping out of the pop-up will cancel the operation)
  • The other member will be created using defaults, to change its type and/or add a free text label or other data, select it and tap the describe icon on its floating menu.

Move a Couple Relationship from one individual to another

  • Select the Couple relationship you want to modify
  • Start dragging the Icon near the member you want to remove from the relationship
  • Drag until you reach an existing Individual to connect it as Couple partner or on an empty space in the genogram to create a new individual as partner

Create a Child-Parents Relationship starting from a couple

  • Select the Couple relationship you want as parents
  • Start dragging the Icon
  • Drag until you reach an existing Individual to connect it as Child or on an empty space in the genogram to create a new individual as Child

Create a Child-Parents Relationship starting from an Individual (the child), multiple Child-Parents Relationships

  • Select the Individual you want to connect as a Child
  • Start dragging the top Icon
  • Drag until you reach an existing Couple Relationship to connect it as Parents or on an empty space in the genogram to create a new default Couple of married individuals as Parents.

Note that an Individual can have as many Child-Parents Relationship as you want so, iGenogram can represent Natural Parents and multiple adoptions or fostering.

Move a Child-Parents Relationship from one couple of Parents to another couple

  • Select the Child-Parents relationship (the vertical line connecting the child to her/his parents) you want to modify
  • Start dragging the near the parents Icon
  • Drag until you reach an existing Couple Relationship to connect it as Parents or on an empty space in the genogram to create a new default Couple of married individuals as Parents.

Twins

  • Create the first of the twins and connect her/him as an ordinary child to her/his parents
  • Select the Child-Parents relationship (the vertical line connecting the child to her/his parents) of the first twin
  • Start dragging the Icon
  • Drag until you reach an existing Individual to connect her/him as twin or on an empty space in the genogram to create a new default individual as twin.
  • Repeat the process to add more twins

Note iGenogram allows the creation of twins connected to the same natural parents and adopted by different families.

Moving Families

Sometimes you need to move more than one icon so it could be useful to move a familiar group by dragging the Parent Couple Relationship. Moving the Couple will also move all its children.

Create or Move an Emotional Relationship

This procedure is very similar to what explained for Couple Relationships.

  • Select the first relationship partner
  • Drag the left or the right icon until it overlaps the other partner or to an empty space where you want to create a new individual as partner
  • When the other partner will be highlighted in green or when you are satisfied with the position of the new partner, drop the icon
  • The new Emotional Relationship will be created with the type you will choose from the pop-up. Tapping outside the pop-up will cancel the operation.

Directed Relationships, Emoji

All Emotional Relationships can be optionally set as directed and represented with a little arrow on their symbols.
To set an Emotional relationship as directed enter its details screen and tap the "Oriented Relationship" option.
If you want to invert the symbol direction, select the relationship and tap the following icon .

If you want to represent particular situations still not managed by iGenogram, please use the free text label available in the Details screen of the relationship.
Remember: You can use Emoji in all texts including labels.

Add information, Labels and Notes to an Individual or Relationship

Tapping the describe icon in objects floating menus or double-tapping the symbol, each graphical object in iGenogram can be further described and/or modified using its Details Screen (except Households).

Each Details Screen contains a Label text field. It can be used to represent additional information like details on pathology, addiction, marriage and separation dates or other data. Emoji can be used in the text.

The Details Screen also allows to attach optionally dated notes to each object.

Notes are not represented in the genogram but they will be printed in chronological order in the PDF Report and can be used to represent events or facts related to the symbols they belong to or to the entire diagram domain.

Notes can also be consulted using the bottom line of the Details Screen of their owners. To see the complete list of Notes use the Events/Notes options in the slide menu.

Unrelated notes (not attached to any of the symbols) can also be used to represent more general information like events impacting more than one member or can contain notes taken during interviews, etc.. Please read below to know more about unrelated notes.

Using Flexible Dates for Individual Birth and Death

When entering birth and death dates the standard iPad method to enter dates is not enough flexible nor efficient.
Even if for some genograms entering the full date is mandatory, for other the age or the year of birth can be enough.
In such cases the input of the complete date can be a great waste of time and a distracting tedious activity.

To solve this problem iGenogram introduced Flexible Dates.
With Flexible Dates the user can choose to enter the complete date, or just the age or the year of birth of the individual.
Furthermore, users can edit age or birth year using the keyboard in a classic text field or quicker slider.
The two methods are available at the same time so that users can use one and, if necessary, correct the entered data with the other.
>Note that iGenogram will always internal store the information as a complete date

iGenogram also introduced a Reference Date (in Document Options) to decide whether to “freeze” the ages at a particular date or to update them using current date when the genogram is open. If a reference date exists, iGenogram uses that date for flexible date editing.

Automatic notes

For each birth or death date entered by the user, iGenogram generate automatically a note with the same date attached to the corresponding Individual. The description of the automatic notes can be edited but their dates can't be changed manually as they are automatically updated if the corresponding birth or death dates are modified.
Automatic notes appear in the overall chronological Notes/Events Lists so, they can be used to investigate eventual coincidences among all the events.

Unrelated Notes

In iGenograms is possible to create events/notes not related to a specific Individual or relationship, for example a note describing a general event impacting all the families or a journaling note of an interview or a session.

The global (symbol related or unrelated) Events/Notes list is accessible from the Genogram Editing Screen pressing the Menu button and choosing the Events/Notes option from the sliding menu.

Unrelated notes only can be entered from this screen tapping on the "Tap here to add event/note row in the table.

Event/Notes can be deleted using the standard “swipe” gesture in the tables where they appear.

Undo & Redo

To speed up the editing, iGenogram will never ask you to confirm operations.
In case of need, Undo and Redo buttons are available in the Toolbar and can be used to recover accidentally deleted or modified data.
In some case, when using the detail form, you changed details not represented on the diagram (i.e. events) tapping the Undo or Redo buttons will not produce visible effects. Anyway, the last changes will be reverted.

Zooming the diagram

You can zoom in and out the genogram using the standard “pinch to zoom” gesture.

Adapt (Fit) the Zoom to the diagram

To automatically set the zoom and center the genogram on the screen press the Fit button on the Toolbar.

Graphical arrangement of Multiple Couple Relationship for the same Individuals

The geometry of couple relationships in iGenogram are automatically calculated and corresponds to a fixed space below the lower member of the couple. When you face a complex situation with multiple marriages for the same persons, you can slightly move up or down the other members to achieve a complete visualization of all the relationships.

Setting Preferences

Document Options

Document Options screen can be accessed by choosing Document Options in the left sliding menu.

  • Password
  • Please see point 2.3 Password protect a document

  • Genogram Reference Date
  • iGenogram introduced the Genogram Reference Date allowing users to choose if they want to “freeze” individuals ages at a particular date or they want them updated with the current date each time the genogram is open.
This option let you specify the Reference Date or choose to always update ages with the current date.

iGenogram Preferences, Legend, Ages, App Language, hiding specific data

iGenogram Preferences screen can be accessed by choosing iGenogram Preferences in the left sliding menu.

  • Report must produce a page for Symbols legend
  • The produced PDF report can optionally be integrated with a page including all symbols and their descriptions.

  • Legend shows only used symbols
  • This option only works if the previous “Report must produce a page for Symbols legend” is on and apply a filter on the legend so that it only contains the symbols used in the genogram.

  • Display names using system font like versions before 1.8
  • Legacy option, will be removed in future versions.

  • Show ages on diagram
  • With this option you can turn off/on the printing of ages in the diagram

  • Shows ages on left instead of in center of individuals
  • Legacy option, will be removed in future versions.

  • Use age format “Years,Months” for people younger than
  • Sometimes, tipically for younger people, is important to display age in terms of months. For people younger than the age you specify here, iGenogram will display age in years, months.
iGenogram uses a default setting of 10, setting 0 will deactivate the option.

  • Hide names, Hide dates, Hide free text labels
  • This option can be helpful if you don't want to see birth and death dates in the diagram (altough they will still exist internally to support the age computing).
Other usages may related to the need to show or print the genogram removing privacy sensitive data like for example when presenting it as a case to other people.

  • App Language Selection
  • You can force iGenogram to use a language different from the one generally configured for the iPad. You can choose among all iGenogram available languages (currently: English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German) in the Setting and then restart the app to apply the change. If you don't know how to restart an app, please follow instructions at the link:

iOS: Force an app to close

Generating documentation and exporting data

Exporting, Printing or e-Mailing a PDF report of the genogram

In the genogram editing screen, tap the Menu button and choose PDF Report, after a bit of calculations a screen with a preview of the report will appear. In the preview screen you can tap on the upper right button and choose to:

  • Print the report
  • This option will only work if your iPad is connected to an AirPrint printer

  • Send the report by e-Mail (your iPad must be properly configured to send mails)
  • You can use this option to share the documentation with a colleague or send the mail to yourself and open the PDF in a printer connected computer.

If you want to preserve the privacy of the people represented and want to send a diagram without their names, labels and dates do not use this option because data are always shown in the second part of the report. Anyway you can use the Print Diagram option below and the “Hide” options in iGenogram Preferences.

  • Copy
  • it will place a copy of the diagram in the clipboard so you can past it in another app

  • Export to...
  • Depending on the apps installed on your iPad, some of them could be able to accept the pdf report as input

Exporting, Printing or e-Mailing a PDF Diagram on multiple pages

A function similar to PDF Report allows to produce a copy of the diagram formatted for printing on one or multiple pages.
In the genogram editing screen, tap the Menu button and choose PDF Diagram a new dialog box will let you choose on how many pages you want to format the diagram and, when you choose Ok, it will display the diagram preview.
First page is the upper left one and all the other pages are produced with a numbering convention useful to assemble them when printed. It looks like: “2H-1V” (second page on horizontal and first on vertical).
As for the PDF Report, you can print, send by email,.. what is in the preview.

Exporting a Document by e-mail

You can export a document using your e-mail (if your device is configured to send e-mails).
This feature can be used to send an editable copy of a genogram to another iPad with the same or newer version of iGenogram installed or simply to maintain copies of a genogram as backup or versioning in your e-mail inbox.
In the Genogram List view (the main screen), tap on the name of the genogram and choose eMail Export from the slide menu.

Faq

My diagram is too near the limit of the canvas and I can't place other individuals there, what can I do?
If you created the diagram with a previous version of iGenogram with a smaller canvas or if your genogram for other reasons is not centered in the canvas you can use the Move diagram to the center of canvas command in the left sliding menu.

How can I represent widows?
Widowing symbol doesn't exist in iGenogram-iPad as it should be clear observing the dead marriage partner, if you feel the need to enforce the visualization of such situation, you can use the free text Label property in the Details Screen of the Marriage and that label will appear just above the couple symbol.

Can I customize the notation and introduce new symbols?

No, at the current stage it is still not possible to introduce new symbols. We plan to introduce this feature in a future release however, today the Free Text Label can be used to represent particular situations.

Can I use iGenograms to represent an arbitrarily large genogram?

In the last release iGenogram increased its original canvas size of almost 6 times introducing a proprietary technology to overcome the memory limits of a portable device.
However even the latest release has some (very large) limits, to have an idea of the size of the canvas you can imagine that its width can accomodate without overposing about 70 Individuals symbols complete of their free text labels (140 without the label but, complete of name, dates, etc..) and its height about 50.
The first screenshot shows an example of the canvas size with two images of the same genogram at different zoom levels.

Will iGenogram teach me how to make genograms?

No, iGenogram will not teach you how to draw a genogram, like a Word Processor will not teach you how to write a book.
Although genogram basics are not too complex, teaching them is out of the scope of iGenogram.
If you are interested in learning about genograms theory, consider to ask help to a specialist, read one of the books on the argument or head to one of the many resources available on the Web.
